beginnings - Peter
Apart from the synoptic gospels; that is Matthew, Mark and Luke (who also wrote Acts) and a short letter by James, all the rest of the New Testament was written by either Paul, Peter or John - nobody really knows who wrote the letter to the Hebrews. These three men, two of which closely walked with Jesus during his physical life on earth, shaped and fashioned under the hand of God, the early church by their writing, travels, lifestyle, encouragement and example.
Many people seem to relate well to Peter. Here was a hard working and impetuous man, always seemingly opening his mouth too soon and thinking far too late. I wonder whether or not he regretted some of the things he said!
When he first met Jesus, Jesus looked at him and said in John Ch1 v42; "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter). Roughly translated in my rather loose translation it means - You are a bit all over the place at the moment but one day you will be rock like. Later Jesus says to Him in response to his recognition of Christ as the Messiah, wherever people make that connection I will build my church. I am looking for rocky types on which to build foundations. I find this hugely encouraging because I can be rather ill-disciplined and loose tongued but Jesus can reach down and change me.
As Peter walked with the Lord there was a slow but gradual change in his life. Through exciting challenges and victories like walking on water (even though he sank) to painful denials and bitter tears, he grew in love for his Lord. Jesus so wonderfully restored him after breakfast early one morning (John 21 v15) and so by the time of Pentecost Peter was ready. The fire and the wind of the Spirit fell and as men came running to see what all the commotion was and accusing the early followers of drunkenness and revelry Peter stands to the fore and makes the preach explaining the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the death and resurrection of Jesus, the result – 3000 come to Christ and the church is born!
May God work a new beginning in me. Please Lord, take my personality and work Godly character in me and change me. Fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may serve you purposefully and powerfully in all that you have called me to do. Thank you.
