bilkojust perfect!

Some days just seem to be perfect. It is the day when everything goes right. When I was much younger I used to love watching Sgt. Bilko. You don’t see it the programme much nowadays but for me it was funny. For those who don’t know, Bilko was the fast talking, smooth operating, gambling loving sergeant in the American army who had his platoon wrapped around his finger plus those in command over him. Usually, however every scheme he came up with backfired in the end. In one story the gods decided to smile on him for 24 hours. When he went in the shower the water steamed hot but for everyone else it was cold. His meal was fabulous while his men had meagre fare. He won every game of cards and then it dawned – he was unbeatable. Collecting everyone’s money it was placed on a horse with no chance. Up to the last 25 metres it was streaking to victory but then time ran out and as the 24 hour deadline passed the horse stopped running and began to graze as the rest of the field swept past. Up until that moment it was the ‘perfect day’!
Have you ever looked over the sea at sunset and said it doesn’t come better than this? I can remember the last exam I ever took never to take one again – perfect! I remember my team gaining promotion, my children being born and becoming a granddad. I have been in beautiful places and just cried from the splendour and wonder of it all – it was all just perfect.
There has been a lot of controversy recently over the creation accounts in the bible as compared to Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. The main issue that seems to be overlooked is that where as Darwin tries to be scientific, the bible seeks to be theological. Theology means literally, ‘the study of God’. One of the main theological points the creation story makes is that God made everything ‘just perfect’. Five times in chapter 1 of Genesis (the book of beginnings) it says, “And God saw that it was good.” However when He made people it says in Genesis ch1 v31 that ‘God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.’ (italics mine). So when we study and seek to find out what God is like we discover that He loves things that are just perfect and wants us to enjoy everything He has made and to be in right relationship with each other in a way that breathes goodness.
When we have those moments of seeming perfection, something that happens to us that causes joy to flood our beings, let it serve as a pointer to the One who loves us and intended all of life to be like this. In so many areas of our lives God leaves his mark of goodness so we might find Him and come to know the author of all things.
