tee-time
There is nothing like an elevated tee. If you are a golfer, and I in my case I use that word loosely, to be able to stand on an elevated tee and see the ground drop before you with the green a mere three wood and a seven iron away, the sun shining and a light breeze at your back then golf doesn’t come much better. With confidence sky high, your heart full and a professional shimmy of the hips you sweep the ball away, watching it clear all obstacles, ponds, lakes and bunkers that they deliberately throw in your way and see it bound bounce on bounce to the centre of the fairway – oh life is sweet! But when you stand at the bottom of the hill and a par five awaits, a gale blowing into your face with rain imminent, you know you will do well to clip the ball beyond the ladies tees with instant humiliation to follow – agh, I will never play this stupid game again!!
Vision is paramount. It is a huge advantage to see. This is why castles are nearly always on the top of hills or in commanding positions above rivers and valleys where lookouts could spot the enemy advancing from miles off and trade routes could be guarded and protected, where taxes could be paid and where other traders, hoteliers, buskers and hawkers could make a handsome profit.
Jesus was always inviting us to see, to lift up our eyes and catch a glimpse of what is going on. To gaze towards the horizon or to climb the mountain to see the view always attracts us and Jesus knows it.
Isaiah wrote in ch 60 v1-4; "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. "Lift up your eyes and look about you: All assemble and come to you; your sons come from afar, and your daughters are carried on the arm. Jesus picks up the same theme in John 4 when He says in v35 I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
We need to have open eyes and good vision to see what God is doing and wanting to do amongst us. He is for us for blessing and fruitfulness. Open my eyes Lord to see the harvest!
