a little bit of a worry?
I think as I get older I get a bit more anxious about things. I can get quite stressed about going away on holiday which is totally irrational considering I enjoy travelling. Relaxing and being de-stressed are what holidays are all about. I need to take plenty of deep breaths on such occasions. Jesus doesn’t want us to be stressed and worried by life and all this world has to offer. If our treasure is in heaven then our hearts will be there as well. In Matthew 6 v19 Jesus says, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
One of my favourite jokes in my humble opinion is this Tommy Cooper classic. ‘The other day I was cleaning up the attic with the wife; filthy dirty and covered with cobwebs, but she’s great with the kids; when I discovered a Stradivarius and a Rembrandt. Unfortunately Rembrandt made rubbish violins and Stradivarius couldn’t paint for toffee!
One of the popular daytime TV programmes on at the moment is ‘Cash in the attic’. The experts come to rummage around in your attic to find objects that will sell at auction. One of the sad things about wonderful and expensive antiques or paintings is that they so often are locked away in fear that they might be stolen. When the Mona Lisa was stolen in 1911 from the Salon Carrè where it had been on display, more people came to see the space where it had hung than had come to see the painting! Dear old Mona was eventually recovered.
Jesus says – don’t do it. He doesn’t mean that we can’t have possessions, although if they rule our lives maybe they should go. The rich young ruler in Luke 18, whom Jesus told to sell all he had and give to the poor, was obviously totally dominated by them. Jesus says no! … store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. If your heart is in heaven then when heaven comes fully on earth or if I should be with Him before that day comes then I will be content and at peace. In the meantime I think I will seek after the Kingdom – coming!?
